Permit

Permits are extendable certificates designed for individuals who qualify to teach in specific fields based on a combination of work experience, education, and assessment(s). Permits are issued in the following fields:
  • Foreign languages
  • Art, Dance, Drama, or Music
  • JROTC
  • Superintendent
  • CTAE Specializations
  • Engineering and Technology
  • Healthcare Science
Permit applicants must be employed by a Georgia LUA. The LUA must work with the applicant to create a Professional Learning Plan (PLP) detailing professional development that will be completed during the permit validity. Permits are valid for 3 years. Please see the sections below for the requirements for permits in different fields.

Foreign Language Fields

The qualifications for an initial permit in a foreign language field include: Requirements to extend the initial permit include:
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.

Performing Artists: Art, Dance, Drama & Music

The qualifications for an initial permit in a performance art field include:
Requirements to extend the initial permit include:
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Passing score on the GACE content assessment for the fields of Art and Music;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.

Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC)

The qualifications for an initial permit in JROTC include:
Requirements to extend the initial permit include:
  • Successful completion of all required JROTC instructor training for full branch certification;
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.

Superintendent

The Superintendent permit is issued to individuals from outside the traditional educational route who are selected to serve in the leadership role of Superintendent.


Qualifications for the initial permit in this field include:

  • Passing score on the GACE content assessment in Educational Leadership;
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.

Career and Technical Specializations

An initial permit may be issued in one of the Career and Technical Specializations (See GaPSC Rule 505-2-.90 CAREER AND TECHNICAL SPECIALIZATIONS) to individuals who meet the entry requirements outlined in the rule for the specific specialization, to include at least 2 years of occupational experience in the field.


Requirements to extend the initial permit include:
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Complete industry testing or licensure standards if the field did not require it for initial issuance;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.

Engineering and Technology

The qualifications for an initial permit in Engineering and Technology include:
Requirements to extend the initial permit include:
  • Passing score on the GACE content assessment in Engineering and Technology;
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.

Healthcare Science

The qualification for an initial permit in Healthcare Science include:
  • Hold an associate’s degree or higher in a healthcare-related field;
  • Hold a current healthcare professional license, registration, or certification that relates to the healthcare field and has been issued by an appropriate governing or regulatory body;
  • Minimum of 2 years of occupational experience in the healthcare field.
  • Passing score on the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment (Test Code 360).
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA

Requirements to extend the initial permit include:
  • Fulfillment of PLP requirements;
  • Employment by a Georgia LUA;
  • Complete an exceptional child course.
