Note: This outdated page of explanation
is provided for historical purposes only. After September 1, 2006,
Georgia certification applicants are required to take the GACE® test
whenever a test is required, either for basic skills or subject area content.
See the GACE® website for details: http://www.gace.nesinc.com
If you are required to take the basic
skills assessment and have not done so, you will need to take the GACE® Basic Skills test.
If you have passed one or more parts of Praxis I but did not achieve a passing composite
score by September 1, 2006, you have until March 1, 2007 to pass the remaining part(s) or
make a passing composite score.
There are two circumstances for basic skills test takers:
- The test taker has passed no parts of Praxis I by September 1, 2006.
In this case the test taker will need to pass all three parts of the
GACE® basic skills test.
- The test taker has passed one or two parts of Praxis I by September 1, 2006.
In this case
- the test taker may submit a passing score for the remaining
one or two parts of the Praxis I before March 1, 2007,
or
- the test taker may submit
passing scores for all three parts of the GACE® basic skills test.
The PSC will not accept a "mix" of passing subtests from Praxis I and passing subtests of
GACE® Basic Skills. Example: if a candidate has passed Praxis I Reading and Writing, the PSC
will not accept a passing Mathematics portion of the GACE® Basic Skills assessment to join with
the two Praxis I parts.

IMPORTANT: All statements below regarding requirements became out of date September 1, 2006.
For current requirements for a particular teacher preparation program you should contact
that institution's representative directly.
Praxis I Test Series
- Basic Skills
Praxis I is an academic skills assessment produced by the Educational Testing
Service (ETS) that tests knowledge in reading, math and writing.
- Required for
Graduates of Georgia Teacher Preparation
Praxis I (or exemption) is required as a part of Georgia approved preparation
program entrance requirements.
- Required for Some
Nonrenewable Certificate Holders
In order to receive either a GA TAPP intern certificate or a nonrenewable
certificate under the "delayed pedagogy" alternative route in Georgia you
must pass the Praxis I. There are additional requirements for
each style of certificate.
- Not Required for
Prior Certificate Holders
If you hold a current or expired Georgia clear renewable
(professional) certification, you are not required to take Praxis
I.
- Not Required for
Holders of Certificates from Other States
If you
hold a current or expired professional certificate from another state or
are being recommended for certification from a preparation program
approved in another state, you are not required to take Praxis
I.
- Paper and Pencil Test or Computer Based
Test
Praxis I is offered in two formats - a computer-based version called Computer
Pre-Professional Skills Test (CPPST) and the paper/pencil version called
Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST). PPST and CPPST are scored on the same
scale.
| · 0710 PPST Reading |

Passing Score: 176 |
| · 0720 PPST Writing |

| · 0730 PPST Mathematics |

| · 5730 CPPST Mathematics |
|
Passing Score: 176 |

|
|
· Passing Composite Score: 526
(A composite score must consist of one score from each of the three
testing areas of reading mathematics and writing, but the scores can
come from either style of test, CPPST or PPST.) |
- CBT Praxis No Longer Offered
The older Praxis I test called CBT is no longer administered,
but scores obtained on the CBT are still accepted by the PSC.
| · 0711 CBT Reading |
|
Passing Score: 322 |
| · 0721 CBT Writing |
|
Passing Score: 321 |
| · 0731 CBT Mathematics |
|

|
|
· Passing Composite Score: 964
(A composite score must consist of one score from each of the three
testing areas of reading mathematics and writing.) |
| · CBT scores may be equated to PPST scores using the concordance
table at the end of this page. |
- Passing Score Computation
If you pass all three Praxis I test components (reading, writing, and mathematics),
then you pass the Praxis I overall. However you may satisfy the Praxis
I test requirement by making an overall (composite) score of 526 or higher
on the PPST version of the Praxis I. You have also satisfied the
Praxis I test requirement if you made an overall (composite)
score of 964 or higher on the CBT version of the Praxis I before it ended.
- Retaking the Praxis I
Note: if you find one of the three tests particularly hard to pass, you may
take the other two tests again (in either version) in an effort to achieve
the passing composite score level. Your highest scores
will be used by the PSC, even if you make lower scores in later
testing. Mandatory waiting times exist between taking and retaking
Praxis I tests; contact ETS to determine the waiting time for the
particular test you need.
- Testing Schedules
- You may check the ETS website
at www.ets.org/praxis for information on the cost of the PPST and the CPPST.
-
Praxis Registration Bulletins with testing sites
and schedules for both PPST and CPPST are available at colleges,
universities, RESAs and ETS.
- You can find the PRAXIS calendar with registration deadlines here and
the test locations here.
Note: flexible testing appointments are possible with computerized
testing. See www.ets.org/praxis/prxcbt.html details.
- Test results are returned approximately
six weeks after the test date for the PPST. CPPST results
for reading and math are immediate, but CPPST writing
scores takes several weeks.
- How to Exempt Praxis I
Praxis I may be exempted if high enough scores are obtained
on the SAT, ACT or GRE. Exemptions scores are as follows:
- SAT exemptions: minimum combined
verbal and mathematics score of 1000
- GRE exemption: minimum combined verbal
and quantitative score of 1030
- ACT exemption: minimum combined English
and mathematics score of 43.
- Practicing for the Praxis I
- A Praxis I tutorial program called Plato is available
at several Georgia colleges and universities, and ETS has instituted
a Praxis I tutorial program though Plato Learning.
- A Praxis I study guide is available from
the ETS Store. For more information click here:

The table entries are scale scores. The PPST scale ranges from 150-190.
The CBT scale ranges from 300-335. Due to scale range differences, all
CBT scores use higher numbers than PPST scores. This does not mean that
individuals have to achieve higher scores on CBT than PPST in order to
pass.
To find the comparable scores in mathematics, reading, or writing, locate
the PPST score under the appropriate subject area and read across to
the column "CBT". For example, if a PPST score in mathematics is 176,
a comparable CBT score is 321; likewise, if a CBT score in reading is
322, then the comparable PPST score is 175. If your score does not appear
on the chart, locate the next score up on the scale and use that score.
For example, if your CBT Writing score is 323, go up to 324 and
then across to the PPST Writing score of 176.
