Navigating Educator Risks: Avoiding Ethical Missteps through Professional
Decision Making
Navigating Educator Risks [Video Presentation]
|
Not only do prospective and practicing educators need to know the Georgia Code of Ethics for
Educators regarding what behavior leads to consequences on a certificate/license, but they also
need guidance to avoid the slippery slope in the “gray” areas in situations where there are no
clear distinctions or delineations between right and wrong, appropriate or inappropriate conduct.
Through real-world scenarios, multiple resources, and a panel of practitioners, participants will
explore how to help pre-service candidates and in-service educators mitigate the risks inherent
in education, while fostering safe and professional learning environments.

Principal Preparation for the 21st Century: Curriculum Redesign Collaborative

Principal Preparation for the 21st Century [Video Presentation]
Educational Leadership Tier 2 Brochure
|
ASU is entering their fifth year of the educational leadership redesign and the third year
of implementation. Find out how cohort 3 is reaping the benefits of the program’s continuous
improvement practices that focus on curriculum, instruction, and assessment (CIA), and
clinical experiences. The presenters will share strategies and lessons learned.
In 2016, The Wallace Foundation selected Albany State University as one of seven universities
across the country to participate in its University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI).
As a member of the UPPI, Albany State University was charged with working with its partner state
agencies, three school districts, and several other essential partners to audit and redesign its
then current principal preparation program. The redesigned Tier II-Educational Specialist program,
now in its fourth year, provides candidates with a 21st century curriculum that includes
problem-based learning activities grounded in continuous school improvement and educational equity.
In addition to providing more details regarding the redesign process, the session will include a
panel discussion of 3-5 recent ASU Tier II graduates from several states. The multi-state
conversation will afford participants with an opportunity to learn the impact of the ASU
redesigned program from an array of school and district administrators as well as teachers who
completed the program.

Is it possible to teach ethical reasoning skills? Yes, we think it is possible to enhance
reasoning skills with practice. In fact, ethical reasoning can be a thread throughout your
entire program. Discover ways that educator preparation programs can prepare candidates to
apply ethical principles and diminish the possibility of behaving unethically on the job.
Teaching ethical reasoning is not about teaching what one should do in particular circumstances,
it is about teaching candidate how to wisely make very difficult decisions involving ethical
considerations where the answers are anything but clear cut.

Innovative Practices and Partnerships
Innovative Practices and Partnerships [Video Presentation]

Being a teacher is rewarding for many, but recently some are finding teaching to be a very
complex and challenging profession. As the teaching profession has become less attractive to
some, the teacher pipeline has weakened. In response, Georgia Educator Preparation Providers
(EPPs) are finding innovative ways to attract, develop and retain teachers in the profession.
In collaboration with P-12 district and school based partners, Georgia EPPs are discovering
innovative ways to broaden pathways into the teaching profession. These creative structures
and collective efforts between EPPs and school-based partners are attempts to insulate the
teacher pipeline.
Join us as we hear the unique initiatives in which Georgia EPPs are engaging to affirm
teaching as a noble and rewarding profession. Featured will be a Grow-Your-Own program

Join this session to address a variety of obstacles to implementing effective supervision

during the recent health pandemic, COVID-19, methods to observational-based supervision
were challenged to adapt appropriately. Through a partnership of Educational Leadership
Candidates with Preservice Teacher Candidates, an organization of virtual classroom
observations, including online post-conferencing, encouraging authentic and reflective
feedback, was utilized with the goal to implement a model for students to attain their
required field experiences/practicum hours with efficacious supervision. Researchers
believe this model will strengthen evidence-based strategies for practitioner-based

Principal Leadership and School Improvement: From Vision to Plans to Action

Much evidence shows that talented principals can have a tremendous effect on teachers, students,

Bridging Preparation to Induction: Constructing the bridge through edTPA,
Teacher and Leader Keys Effective Systems (TKES, LKES)
Presentation
Gallery Walk
InTASC Standards
|
Description: The question of how to bridge preservice teacher preparation through induction
and ongoing professional learning is a key topic in the national conversation on teacher development and
retention. Teacher educators have advocated for stronger induction models aligning the gap between preservice
teacher preparation and in-service professional learning in support of all teachers and subsequently, their
retention (Anderson & Olsen, 2006; Cochran-Smith, 2003; Darling-Hammond, 2000; Feiman-Nemser, 2001; Smith &
Ingersoll, 2004). In this presentation, the presenters will share “The Bridge,” a model developed to connect preservice teacher education professional learning plans (PLPs) with school district PLPs, making the transition from preservice to in-service a seamless process. Supporting the ongoing growth and development of all teachers, while focused on student learning, is a goal of both the provider and school district personnel.

Principal Pipeline: The Role of the University
|
Description: “Pipeline” is a metaphor suggesting a continuous flow, without interruption, from beginning
to end. Historically, Georgia has never created a principal pipeline. What are the various components of a
principal pipeline, who are the actors who can influence the pipeline, what local and state level decisions
must be made to support a vibrant principal pipeline, and what are the consequences if policy that
supports a pipeline is not in place? Program providers have an opportunity to significantly impact the
pipeline, but often don’t position themselves to make an impact. Participants will have an opportunity to
review and comment on a draft Georgia Leader Pipeline Logic Model that is currently under development.
Presenters: David M. Hill, Ph.D. Director of Special Projects, Georgia Professional Standards Commission

Leader Dispositions: The Neglected Piece of the Preparation Puzzle
|
Description: Human resources directors have long known knowledge and skills are important, but not
sufficient for leader success. The often neglected third ingredient is dispositions. With support from the
Wallace Foundation, Dr. Hooper has developed a dispositions instrument that uses a 360° approach to
examine leader dispositions. Learn about the development and use of this instrument. Georgia is about to
embark on development of a state leader dispositions instrument; Dr. Hooper’s work will help inform the
work group that will begin development work in the next few months.

Preparing School Leaders to Implement the Georgia Department of Education’s Systems of Continuous Improvement
|
Description: The Georgia Department of Education has created a continuous improvement framework
based on extensive longitudinal research in Chicago led by Anthony Bryk. The framework consists of five
essential supports that influence student learning and achievement. Leadership is the driver of the other
four supports. Without strong leadership, school improvement is difficult and cannot be sustained.
Participants will get an overview of the framework, learn how GaDOE uses the framework, and will
examine what leader candidates must know to effectively implement the Systems of Continuous
Improvement.

Georgia Department of Education

Quality Measures: A Continuous Improvement Tool for Educational Leadership Programs
|
Description: Quality Measures is a collaborative self-assessment process used by preparation programs
and their partners as an important tool in a continuous improvement process. Both national and state
accreditation processes require program providers to engage in a continuous improvement process so
Quality Measures offers a self-assessment that supports such a process. Quality Measures uses a rubricbased
protocol that focused on evidence across four program components. Participants will get an
overview of these program components, how the process works, and how it might fit in the continuous
improvement process required for program approval in Georgia.
