Paraprofessional educators in Georgia
must hold certification from the Professional Standards Commission.
For purposes of Georgia certification, the term 'Paraprofessional' also
includes teacher's aides.
Georgia Paraprofessional Certification (PARA) - Basic Requirements
- To become certified as a Georgia
paroprofessional, you must be employed in a Georgia school system.
Only your public school system employer can apply for your
paraprofessional certification
. The application transaction is done online after you have provided basic information
and materials required for the application.
- Federal hiring guidelines pertaining to your
particular assignment may require you to pass a GACE paraprofessional test. Click here to see details of the test from
GACE.
- If you change job assignments, the circumstances of your new
placement may require you to pass the paraprofessional test, even if it
was not required for your prior job. Your employer will set the
guidelines for whether you need to pass the test, not the Professional
Standards Commission.
-
Your new
(or prospective) employer can provide information about paraprofessional preparation programs in your field and
in your geographic location. Click here to see a
list of approved paraprofessional preparation programs.
- Prior to certification you will be asked to
complete a PSC Paraprofessional
Application form, available from your employing school
system, containing your answers to the following questions:
- Have you ever resigned or been discharged (including contract
termination or non-renewal) for committing a felony or for committing
a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude (excluding minor traffic
offenses), or for committing a breach of the code of ethics or for
a violation of state education laws, or are you currently under
investigation or otherwise have any such charges pending against
you?
- Have you pled guilty, been found guilty, entered a plea of nolo
contendere, been granted first offender treatment without adjudication
of guilt, or been placed under a court order whereby an adjudication
or sentence was otherwise withheld for any felony or for any misdemeanor
offense involving moral turpitude (excluding minor traffic offenses),
or is any such charge currently pending against you?
- Have you surrendered a professional
certificate/credential/license/permit or had one denied, revoked or
suspended, or is any investigation or adverse action now pending
against you?
