General Certification Information

  • All public school educators in Georgia are required to have a certificate from the PSC, except for substitute teachers.

  • Georgia offers educator certification of six types: Teacher, Service , Leadership, Permit, Technical Specialist, and Paraprofessional.

  • In order to become certified, you must have at least a four-year degree from an accredited academic college. Special exceptions to this rule exist for certification in career/technology education teaching fields, service fields, and leadership fields.
Click here to see career/technology education (vocational) rules.

  • Not all degree fields (majors) are well matched to certification teaching fields. When you select a certificate field for your application, it should be as close as possible to your college major field.
Click here to see the certification field closest to your academic major.

  • If you completed student teaching in a teacher training program, you should submit a recommendation form from your preparation program's certification official along with the application for your first Georgia certificate (or in addition to your online application procedure).
Click here to see application forms and the recommendation form available for download from the web.

  • If you did not complete student teaching in a teacher training program, you must apply for a certificate in one of the methods described in the list below.

Note: in order to apply for the either of the following two options, you must be finished with your four-year degree, and your overall bachelor level grade point average must be at least 2.5 on a 4 point grading scale (this 2.5 requirement is waived if your graduation was more than 10 years ago).  The only exceptions are for the particular career/technology education fields which do not require a 4-year degree and other fields that require a specific degree or major, such as the fields of school counseling and school nutrition director.
