Steps to Teaching

 
 

Ages 4-10

Early Childhood: Early Childhood teachers teach all subjects in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

Typical Preparation

Includes study of child development and pedagogy for the young child, including special methods for teaching reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies to young children.

How do I become certified to teach Early Childhood?

Ages 11-14

Middle Grades: Middle Grades teachers teach at least two subjects in grades 4-8.

Typical Preparation

Includes study of the nature and needs of middle grades learners, including appropriate pedagogy for middle grades learners. Requires preparation (a minimum of 15 semester hours) in at least two of the following content areas: English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, reading.

How do I become certified to teach Middle Grades?

Ages 13-18

Secondary: Secondary teachers teach one subject in grades 7-12.

How do I become certified to teach Secondary Grades?

All Ages

Pre-kindergarten-Twelve: Teachers of Foreign Languages, Art, Music, Physical Education and Special Education teach these subjects in all grades.

Typical Preparation

Requires a major (or the equivalent) in the field of certification, as well as study of the nature and needs of learners and methods and materials for teaching grades P-12.
