What is National Board Certification?
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) provides classroom teachers with an opportunity to participate in a year long process to assess their accomplished teaching. To qualify, the teacher must have a college degree and three years of teaching experience, pay the $65 non-refundable processing fee and the $2500 qualifying fee. The process consists of 4 portfolio entries and 6 assessment center activities. Visit http://www.nbpts.org for more information.

Georgia Code 20-2-212.2
The Georgia General Assembly amended existing legislation in 2009 stipulating that only teachers currently receiving salary increases for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification shall be eligible for continuing increases with an exception for teachers enrolled in the process as of March 1, 2009. In addition, if a teacher leaves a teaching position he or she is no longer eligible for the salary increase. Salary increases are subject to appropriations by the General Assembly. Prepayment of Fees to NBPT

Pre-application for prepayment by previous applicants

Candidates who previously applied for and were awarded state or state-managed funds in prepayment to NBPTS, who officially withdrew from the process prior to the portfolio due date and provide evidence that NBPTS returned funds authorized by the PSC are now eligible to re-apply for prepayment!

Financial obligation of candidates awarded prepayment of fees to NBPTS:

Candidates who are awarded a prepayment subsidy must pay the non-refundable and non-renewable $500 qualifying fee to NBPTS prior to the authorization of prepayment of the fees NBPTS. Further, if the withdrawal occurs after the portfolio due date and NBPTS is not refunded the prepayment fees, the candidate MUST repay the amount equal to the total sum prepaid. Advanced/Re-Take Candidates and Non-completers of the NBPTS Process
The NBCT process may take three years to complete. Candidates who received prepayment of fees for the process must complete one of two forms and submit it by February 15, 2010.

Georgia Code 20-2-212.2 requires that candidates in receipt of state-managed funds turn in to NBPTS all 10 scorable entries by the published deadlines, or to officially withdraw from the process by submitting the appropriate forms to NBPTS prior to the portfolio due date. Candidates who turned in all 10 scorable entries, do not have to re-pay the funds provided through the state. In addition, all recipients of state or state managed funds must remain in a Georgia public school for one year after score announcement to fulfill the service agreement specified in the promissory note.

NEW: Retake candidates who have not previously received subsidy funds can receive subsidy funds of up to $350 per exercise for up to two retake exercises (both exercises must be taken within the same candidate cycle). These allocations must be submitted no later than January 31, 2010.

Candidates who did not turn in all required work by the deadline, or who did not withdraw in time for the state's funds to be reimbursed by NBPTS must re-pay the funds immediately.

To verify that you met all requirements stipulated in the promissory note that you signed and had notarized, please download the Form for Advanced Candidates, or Form for Non-Completers, print, complete and mail it certified mail, return receipt requested and postmarked before February 15, 2010 to:
