What is National Board Certification?

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) provides classroom teachers with an opportunity to participate in a year long process to assess their accomplished teaching. To qualify, the teacher must have a college degree and three years of teaching experience, pay the $65 non-refundable processing fee and the $2500 qualifying fee. The process consists of 4 portfolio entries and 6 assessment center activities. Visit http://www.nbpts.org for more information.

Request for Reimbursement of Personally Paid Initial Application Fees to NBPTS

Georgia Code 20-2-212.2 provides for reimbursement of up to $2000 of personally paid initial application fees (does not include the $565 non-refundable and non-reimbursable qualifying fee) for educators who successful attain National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), and who are teaching fulltime in a Georgia public school that is designated "Needs Improvement" on the Department of Education's list. The state does not provide reimbursement for re-take fees, nor does it reimburse individuals for application fees paid by third parties. To apply for reimbursement, please download the reimbursement form (click here), sign and attach it to the documents listed:

  • Copy of personal check or credit card receipt for initial application fees personally paid to NBPTS

Advanced or Re-Take Candidates of the NBPTS Process

The NBCT process may take three years to complete. Candidates who received prepayment of fees for the process must complete one of two forms and submit it by February 15, 2008.

Georgia Code 20-2-212.2 requires that candidates in receipt of state or state-managed funds turn in to NBPTS all 10 scorable entries by the published deadlines, or to officially withdraw from the process by submitting the appropriate forms to NBPTS prior to the portfolio due date. Candidates who turned in all 10 scorable entries, do not have to re-pay the funds provided through the state. In addition, all recipients of state or state managed funds must remain in a Georgia public school for one year after score announcement to fulfill the service agreement specified in the promissory note.

The state does not provide reimbursement for re-take fees, nor does it reimburse individuals for re-take application fees.

Candidates who did not turn in all required work by the deadline, or who did not withdraw in time for the state's funds to be reimbursed by NBPTS must re-pay the funds immediately.

To verify that you met all requirements stipulated in the promissory note that you signed and had notarized, please download the "Form For Advanced Candidates" (click here), print, complete and mail it certified mail, return receipt requested and postmarked before February 15, 2008 to:

What is The Knowledgeable Teacher Course?

Refer to the course schedule displayed on the menu to the left for registration information for currently approved classes. Please contact the course provider directly. The list is updated monthly. There is no need to contact the PSC for a list of classes because only those posted at this website have been approved and no additional scheduling information is available.

Successful online applicants for available state or state-managed funds will enter the course number for the class in which they successfully completed. The course number is displayed on the SDU/PLU Completion Form that course providers are required to distribute to successful course completers. To replace a missing SDU/PLU Completion Form, contact your course provider. Please do not contact the PSC for this information, as it is the provider's responsibility to furnish the evidence of completion.

What are the procedures for obtaining PSC approval of NB courses?

Current providers of The Knowledgeable Teacher, Accomplished Teacher and Candidate submit forms for PSC-approval (see menu) each time a course is offered, and prior to announcing or taking registrations.

  • The application for PSC-approval must include a topical outline for each scheduled session and describe the method of assessment to be used. New
  • Each participant is required to complete and return to the provider an PLU Prior approval form prior to the first class session. This is not an option.
  • Each provider will distribute the PLU completion form to registrants.
  • Forms and reports that the provider is required to submit to the PSC are located on the menu at this website.

All enrollees in a PSC approved class must turn in his/her PLU Prior Approval form before the end of the first class session (unless the class is taken for academic credit). Only those with PLU Prior Approval Forms or official registration for an academic credit class may participate in the course. There are no exceptions to this policy.

New Requirements for Facilitators of PSC-Approved Pre-Candidate or Candidate Classes

Facilitators of PSC-approved courses for pre-candidates and candidates must renew the training required every two years. A facilitator's eligibility to teach a course is based on the beginning date of the course. For example, training expiring on May 27, 2007 would still be active for a course that begins prior to or on May 27, 2007, but not for a class that begins after that date.

Facilitators may initiate the renewal process by selecting "Application for Facilitator Training Renewal" from the menu at this website and following the directions provided.

  • The application may be submitted to the PSC 90 days prior to the expiration date and should be received by the PSC no later than 10 days prior to the renewal expiration date.
  • A password for entry to the online renewal procedure will be sent by return e-mail.
  • The correctly completed renewal assessment must be received by the PSC prior to 5:00 p.m. on the last business day prior to or on the expiration date.
  • 100% accuracy is required for renewal.
  • Three attempts are allowed for 100% success on the assessment.
  • Facilitators who are unsuccessful in completing renewal must wait six months before re-taking Facilitator training, and may NOT work with pre-candidates or candidates in any capacity during that time.
  • Effective March 1, 2005, ANY facilitators who has contact with pre-candidates or candidates must be PSC-approved.

To prepare for the assessment, review the following documents:

  • First, download from the menu at this website, a copy of the Handbook (revised) and review the standards for The Knowledgeable Teacher, The Accomplished Teacher, The Candidate, and The Facilitator.
  • Become familiar with Professional Standards Commission's policies, procedures, and requirements for facilitators.
  • Next, visit http://www.nbpts.org/candidates/ethics.cfm and download and copy information regarding NBPTS Ethic's policies.
  • Study the NBPTS policies and become familiar with the rules and consequences.

Correctly complete the assessment prior to the expiration date of your previous training and return it to the PSC no later than 5:00 p.m. on the business day prior to or on the expiration date.
