Georgia Certification Levels

Level One - (Vocational Education fields only)
A minimum of a high school diploma or the GED equivalent.

Level Two - (Vocational Education fields only)
A minimum of an associate's degree or one of the following options:

 
  1. 54 semester/90 quarter hours of acceptable college credit


  2. A two-year program consisting of a minimum of 2,000 clock hours through a regionally accredited postsecondary vocational/technical school in the field in which certification is requested


  3. A minimum of 27 semester/45 quarter hours of acceptable college credit or university credit and a minimum of 1,000 clock hours through an accredited vocational/technical school in the field in which certification is requested.

(There is no Level Three certification in Georgia.)

Level Four - generally, a minimum of a bachelor's degree (usually 120-126 semester/200-210 quarter hours) or the commission's determined equivalent (e.g., B.A., Pharm.D., D.C.).

Level Five - generally, a minimum of a master's degree (usually 30-40 semester/50-66 quarter hours beyond a bachelor's and often with a thesis) or the commission's determined equivalent (e.g., M.Ed., M.S.W., O.D.).

Level Six - generally, a minimum of an education specialist's degree (usually 56-70 semester/93-116 quarter hours beyond a bachelor's); completion of all requirements for a level seven doctoral degree except the dissertation and unconditional admission to candidacy; or the commission's determined equivalent (e.g., Ed.S., Diploma of Advanced Study in Teaching, D.B.A., M.F.A.).

Level Seven - generally, a minimum of a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree (usually 80-100 semester/132-166 quarter hours beyond a bachelor's and includes dissertation, significant research, and comprehensive examinations) or the commission's determined equivalent (e.g., J.S.D., D.M.A.). Degrees with "doctoral" or "doctorate" in the degree title are not automatically Level Seven equivalents and may result in a certification level of four, five, six, or seven.
