Georgia will certify you in a
field and level which match the certification in your original state as
closely as possible. Georgia is a participant in the nationwide reciprocity
agreement arranged by the National Association of State Directors of
Teacher
Education and Certification (NASDTEC ). In addition to certificate
holders from other states, Georgia welcomes (and
issues certificates to) professionally certified educators from the District of Columbia,
any U.S. territory, the National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards (NBPTS), and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA). See the notes at
the bottom of this page about special circumstances for your certification
based on reciprocity.
If you are certified in another
country, do not hold U.S. citizenship, and wish to become certified in Georgia, see the
notes on the International Exchange certification route.

Notes on Georgia's
Reciprocity with Other States
- Georgia Certificate Field Titles- The field(s) you hold in other states may not exactly match fields
in Georgia, and the title and description of your originating state
certificates will likely be different from Georgia's title and description.
Whenever possible Georgia will issue a certificate comparable in type
and fields to the one(s) you already hold.
- Georgia Testing Requirements- In the state where your certificate was issued, you
may have taken certification tests which were not
tests in the "content" of your certification field. If that was true in your state, you may
be required to pass the PSC's required subject area content test for your field before your
first Georgia certificate expires. Click here to
see the Georgia subject area tests and passing scores.
If you have accumulated three full years of successful school
experience in another state within the last five years, and
if that experience was gained while holding a valid state
certificate, you may not be required to take Georgia's required subject area test.
- Other Special Georgia Requirements- Georgia has other
special requirements which you may also be asked to complete
during the validity span of your first Georgia certificate. Your
transcripts will be evaluated to determine which special Georgia
requirements apply to you. If you have accumulated three full
years of successful school experience in another state
within the last five years, and if that
experience was gained while holding a valid state certificate in
the field in which the experience was earned, you may
not be required to satisfy some of the special Georgia
requirements.
- Will I Be Eligible for a Georgia Certificate? - Your request for a Georgia certificate
based on the professional certificate you already hold
in another state will almost always result in a professional Georgia certificate.
Click here to see details about your
state. The special Georgia requirements which we ask you to complete during the
span of your first Georgia certificate will vary depending on your
experience.
- What if My Certificate was Revoked in my Home State? - If your certificate was revoked for any reason in your originating
state, NASDTEC reports that information to Georgia through its Educator
Clearinghouse. In such a case, an ethics
investigation will precede the action taken on your request for certification here in Georgia.
