Because "content knowledge" in the fields of
Special Education differs somewhat from "content knowledge" in
most other teaching fields, verifying Special Education content knowledge
as an initial eligibility requirement also differs for alternative routes.
Under the option outlined below, at the discretion of the employing
school system, selected candidates may be eligible for Non-Renewable, test-based
certificates in Special Education. The subject area content assessment must
then be completed, along with all other designated special Georgia requirements,
during the validity period of the non-renewable certificate.
The employing system may request this style of test-based non-renewable certificate if
-
the applicant has passed the GACE® Basic Skills Test,
-
the applicant has a PSC-approved degree with appropriate GPA,
-
the applicant is assigned a mentor teacher, and
- the applicant will be offered employment in Special Education if the application is successful.
The educator must
complete all program requirements and GACE® content assessment
during the validity period of the non-renewable certificate.
Note: a teacher who receives a non-renewable certificate in a special education field with this
route and who takes no subject area content tests will be considered NOT highly qualified to teach
specifice content subjects.
