Teaching Certificates

Teaching certificates are issued in fields that allow the individual to teach subject matter as part of the school curriculum. In most cases, the teacher works in a classroom with students. Teaching fields are divided into several classifications including Early Childhood (Preschool-5), Middle Grades (4-8), secondary (6-12) fields such as English, Math, Science, History, Business, and Home Economics, and Preschool-12 fields such as Art, Music, Health and Physical Education, Foreign Language, and Special Education. The letter "T" indicates that the certificate is in a teaching field

Service Certificates

Service certificates are issued in fields that allow the individual to provide support services to students, school personnel, and school operations. With these fields, the individual may work with students but not usually in a traditional classroom setting. Service fields include Audiology, Media Specialist, School Counseling, School Nutrition Director, School Psychology, School Social Work, and Speech and Language Pathology. Some service fields are initially issued at one level and require a higher level of preparation for continued certification in the field. Educators in many of these fields, in addition to their PSC certificate, also hold licensure by other state or national organizations such as licenses issued by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Examining Boards Division or the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) for Speech Pathologists. The letter "S" indicates that the certificate is in a service field.

Leadership Certificates

Leadership certificates are issued in fields that allow the individual to administer or supervise a school system, school, or program. The field of Educational Leadership allows the individual to serve as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal, assistant principal, or in other leadership roles. Between 1980 and 1996, initial certificates in this field at the Master’s level were issued as non-renewable certificates and required a higher level of preparation for continued certification in the field. The letter "L" indicates that the certificate is in a leadership field.
